Venice is a mix of water canals, small narrow streets and more than 400 footbridges ( often with steps). Choosing the right location of your hotel will save you a lot of trouble. Venice has some of the most expensive hotels in Italy. Configuration of the city makes it very expensive. There is also a lot of demand for accommodation in Venice which drives the price up.

TRONCHETTO is artificial island where most of the parking in Venice is located. This area is important for you if you are comming to Venice   by car.

PIAZZALE ROMA  this area is important if you are coming by car. PIAZZALE ROMA is also important if you are coming by bus or taxy from the airport.

PIAZZA SAN MARCO is important if you are coming to Venice by boat from the Marco Polo airport.



San Marco is probably the most popular district in Venice. This is the oldest part of Venice. Some of the most famous monuments and attractions of Venice are located in this district. This is also probably the most expensive part of Venice to stay in.  In this sestiere you will find following famous sites:

Doges Palace ( Palazzo Ducale )   Doges Palace is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. This is probably the most famous example of civic Gothic architecture.

Saint Marks Square ( Piazza San Marco)  Main public square in Venice. Napoleon called it “the drawing-room of Europe”.

The Bridge of Sighs ( Ponte dei Sospiri) Famous bridge connecting Doges Palace and the New Prison.

The Marciana National Library ( Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana) beautiful Renaissance building holding some of the most important classical texts.

The Bell Tower ( Campanile di San Marco )  One of the most famous symbols of Venice.

THE WESTIN EUROPA & REGINA  is located inside 17th century palazzo. This hotel offers one of the best views on Canal Grande.

THE GRITTI PALACE  Part of Starwood, The Gritti Palace offers 21 suite and also magnificent view on the Grand Canal. This hotel also has the largest rooftop terrace in Venice.



CAVALETTO E DOGE ORSEOLO Part of Best Western, one of the oldest hotels in Venice. This hotel is located just behind St Marks Square. Interesting thing about this hotel is that it offers private docks where you can arrive directly by boat or gondola ( how cool is that!).

STARHOTELS SPLENDID Located in the very center of Venice but in one of the more quiet canals. This hotel is very good option if you want to be located in the very center of Venice but still have some peace and quiet.

PALACE BONVECCHIATI and HOTEL BONVECCHIATI Palace is very close to St Marks Square and Rialto bridge but at the same time secluded from high tourist traffic. Hotel Bonvechiati is located in Calle Goldoni also 5 minutes from St Marks Square and Rialto bridge.

HOTEL AL CODEGA   This is a family run 4 star hotel. This hotel is located in peaceful courtyard.

HOTEL RIALTO  This 4 star hotel is overlooking Rialto Bridge. This is of course one of the most popular tourist areas in Venice. The area around the Rialto Bridge is full of restaurants and small shops.


 HOTEL SAN MOISE    5 minutes from St Marks Square, this hotel has peaceful inner courtyard and a view to one of the canals. Hotel is located inside 16th century building.

BEST WESTERN MONTECARLO  Very basic 3 star hotel. Only 50 meters from St Marks Square, this hotel has 48 rooms and a very popular restaurant Antico Pignolo.

HOTEL FLORA This is probably one of the best choices for a relatively cheap accommodation in San Marco sestiere. Very good location, nice courtyard and very good reviews.


Dorsoduro is a home to some of the most important museums in Venice. This area feels more like a real city with quiet streets and canals, local bars and restaurants  and far less tourists than San Marco sestiere.You can easily get to Dorsoduro by crossing the Accademia bridge.

Peggy Guggengheim Collection  Famous modern art gallery. Entrance fee is 14 Euro. Here you can see Picasso (The Poet, On the Beach), Braque (The Clarinet), Duchamp (Sad Young Man on a Train).

Ca’ Rezzonico  This beautufil baroque palace is home to Museum of 18th century Venice.

Gallerie dell’Accademia Museum gallery of pre-19th-century art. Some of the most important works you can see here: Paolo Veronese Battle of Lepanto, Tintoretto St. Mark Freeing the Slaves, Jacopo Bassano Adoration of the Shepherds. You can visit the official website here.


Centurion Palace  Overlooking Canal Grande. Centurion Palace is a luxury 5 star hotel in Dorsoduro sestiere. This is one of the hotels you can reach by private water taxi or by gondolla if you are in the mood for romance.


Hotel Palazzo Stern Very close to Academia, this hotel overlooks Canal Grande. 15th century building built by Malpaga family in moorish style. Stern family bought the palazzo in the beginning of 20th century. Hotel is completely renovated in magnificent detail.

Ca’ Pisani   This is the first design hotel in Venice. 14th century palace has retained its original appearance. This excellent hotel houses some famous works of Italian Futurism.

 San Sebastiano Garden Just 18 private and exclusive rooms. Amazing rooms and peaceful garden very close to major tourist attractions.


Hotel Belle Arti Very close to Academia. This is a great 3 star hotel offering some peace and quiet in a very busy area of Venice. Another hotel with great garden in the heart of the city.

Cannaregio stretches from the train station on the west to the Ponte Rialto on the east. Cannaregio is 2nd biggest district in Venice. Santa Lucia train station is located in Cannaregio. Here you will also find Ca’ d’Oro, best example of Venetian flower gothic. This sestiere is full of peaceful canals and secluded corners. The Guardian has very good overview of several interesting cafes and restaurants.

Main attractions in Cannaregio.

Ca’ d’Oro Probably the most beatiful palace in Venice. Ca’ d’Oro is the best example of Venetian Gothic. Currently it is home to Galleria Giorgio Franchetti.

Santa Maria dei Miracoli This renaissance church was built between 1481 and 1489 by Pietro Lombardo. The church is also known as “marble church”. Recently restored  by Save Venice society.


Ca’ Sagredo. Truly amazing 5 star hotel. Ca’ Sagredo is actually a National Monument. This is a well-preserved 15th century palace. Hotel has only 42 rooms and suites and is a home to popular L’Alcova restaurant.

Boscolo Venezia Autograph collection. As many other hotels in Venice Boscolo Venezia is located in the Rizzo-Patarol palace. Hotel has a secret garden. Great for unwinding after a long day. This is a good choice if you want to avoid overcrowded San Marco.


Pesaro Palace. Usually gets very good revviews. This is a 4 star boutique hotel in Cannaregio. Hotel is located in historic palazzo overlooking Ca’ d’Oro and the Grand Canal.
