Dorsoduro is one of 6 districts of Venice. This is the area where you will find Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Ca’ Foscari university, Palazzo Dario and many other attractions.
Dorsoduro includes south part of Venice and also Giudecca island which is separated from Venice by Giudecca canal. This is the area where you can find refuge from mad tourist crowds of San Marco. Dorsoduro is full of quiet streets, small shops and bars and restaurants. Dorsoduro is home to Venice Ca’ Foscari university, this makes it probably the liveliest area of the city in the evening ( Campo Santa Margherita).
As you can see from the map, Dorsoduro occupies south part of Venice ( Giudecca island is also administratively part of Dorsoduro).
This sestire starts with Punta della Dogana on the east. You will recognize triangular shape of former customs house which is now a center for contemporary art. Right after Punta della Dogana you can see Santa Maria della Salute, famous 17th century baroque church and one of most photographed sights in Venice.
The center of Dorsoduro is Campo Santa Margherita ( largest open area in Venice after St Mark’s Square). This is the heart of Dorsoduro, here you will find probably the most lively night life in Venice with bars opened until late in night.
If you are looking for interesting bars in Venice I can recommend Cafe Blue and Cafe Noir.
In my opinion this is one of the best areas to stay in Venice. There are several reasons. You are very close to San Marco and all the main attractions but at the same time this area is not overcrowded by tourists. This sestiere stil feels like a real city. Some of the most interesting attractions are right here. There are few great hotels in Dorsoduro, I will mention just few:
- Ca’ Maria Adele
- Centurion Palace
- Ca’ Pisani
- Agli Alboretti
In case that you want to browse trough more hotels read this post: Dorsoduro hotels.
This sestiere also offers some very good restaurants. I will mention here just few.
- Ai Gondolieri ( excellent restaurant close to Peggy Guggenheim)
- Do Farai
- Impronta Cafe
In case that you want to browse trough more restaurants read this post.

Right after Punta della Dogana you can see another famous Dorsoduro attraction, Santa Maria Della Salute ( or simply Salute for Venetians). The church was built in 17th century after devastating outbreak of plague. Baldassare Longhena designed baroque church in the form of a rotunda. La Salute is today probably one of the most photographed churches in Venice.
Peggy Guggenheim Collection
Peggy Guggenheim started collecting artworks between 1938 and 1946. The collection is located in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni ( which was Peggy Guggenheim home for 30 years). Palazzo Venier is 18th century Venetian palace overlooking Grand Canal. Collection covers Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract expressionism.
